The health of our adolescents really matters.
Modern teens are at risk. Unrealistic societal expectations and unhealthy lifestyle choices have led to unprecedented levels of stress and self-destructive behavior. Low self-esteem, poor body image, alcohol-related car accidents, texting while driving, substance use, bullying, dating violence, obesity and eating disorders are serious problems that must be addressed immediately and effectively. The primary causes of death in adolescents are accidents, homicide and suicide – and they are preventable.
Experts claim that today’s teens may be the first generation who don’t live as long as their parents.
With all of our concern over what our teens are doing, we’ve lost sight of a critical part of the picture: how teens are feeling.
We use our heads to study the risks and expect our teens to use rational thought when we call them out on their behavior or raise our expectations. But, we forget that teenagers’ brains are under renovation during adolescence. Their cognitive and emotional pathways are rewriting and flourishing – a process that takes place in the head AND the heart.
BodiMojo believes that feelings matter and that feelings are the gateway to connecting with and motivating teens to make positive changes in their lives.
Today’s teenagers are at high risk of burnout.
According to the American Psychological Association (2014), teenagers are – for the first time since recorded – just as stressed out as grown-ups. Pressures put on teens by society, parents, teachers, peers and even the teens themselves are often unrealistic and impossible:
- Teens are expected to continually outperform themselves and their peers
- When teens try to measure their worth according to these unrealistic expectations, they reduce themselves to status updates and stylized images
- Conflicting messages have teens in a headspin: trying to live up to superficial beauty ideals while being bombarded with advertising for fast food
It’s no wonder our teenagers are reaching their breaking point.
As health providers, parents, educators and mentors, we have the responsibility to ensure our teens are empowered to make the best choices. The teenage years are ideal for guiding and coaching kids to establish lifelong wellness habits.
Connecting with teenagers and building confidence from the inside out is critical to raising healthy, well-adjusted adults.
It’s time to integrate both head and heart using BodiMojo’s innovative tools!
