Valentine’s: Variation on a Theme (A Guy’s Viewpoint)

February 14th, 2012 by Daniel Melzer · No Comments

Despite all the hype, Valentine’s Day can be stressful for some teens. It is a day of expectations, where couples want to show special affection for each other, which is often accompanied by the formalities of flowers or chocolates (driven by lots of marketing). Such displays of attraction and caring can be nice, but I’ve found that a good way to take the stress or worry away from Valentine’s Day is to disregard traditional expectations and focus on what really matters – showing that you care about someone.

In my view, one of the most important things that one can go to show that you care is to make sure that your significant other is comfortable with you and the things that you do (See Remy’s post on smart teen dating). In middle school, high school, and even college, kids are still trying to navigate the world of romance which often leads to awkward or sometimes unwanted interactions. The best way to avoid unpleasant situations is to talk about them, even if that seems like it would be un-cool or awkward. It’s always better to clarify that someone is comfortable in a relationship. Maybe that  includes asking that someone if they are ok with how you interact with them in public or how you talk about them to your family. There are so many great ways to talk to your significant other and make them feel more comfortable in a relationship. Forget the clichéd gifts and leave stress behind by doing something that actually matters for a relationship!

So Ok, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about romantic relationships. It is also a great time to embrace and show appreciation for important people in your life, such as your friends and family. Despite what some might say, it’s really ok to be single and Valentine’s Day can be an opportunity to thank and spend time with people who you care about, regardless of your romantic involvement.

Don’t be afraid to try something new and I hope everyone has a great Valentine’s Day whether it is with your significant other, your best friends, or maybe just your family.
