My UnEncounter at the UnConference: Yes, Teens Care About Health

October 4th, 2008 by admin · No Comments

The BodiMojo team is up and running, and starting to network with the tech community in Massachusetts. As BodiMojo’s creative director, I had an illuminating dialogue recently at the region’s first Technology unConference, sponsored by Sun Microsystems. It was the first time that I ventured out to promote BodiMojo, and so, I found it appropriate that BodiMojo was being informally introduced at the innovative unConference. The unConference is a new style of conference where anything goes: there is no structured agenda, and participants can lead groups or volunteer as an expert speaker.

At the unConference I had well, let’s call it an unEncounter, an unplanned conversation during a lunch round-table. A 60-year-old hipster with a ponytail, cufflinks—and a bit too much caffeine—asked me about the “Bodimojo” logo on my nametag. “It’s an online health destination for teens,” I said, between bites of a chicken salad sandwich. He seemed mildly patronizing, and finally asked, “Do teens really care about ‘health?’ I don’t think health is an issue for them, they’re immortal at that age.”

Good point. And here’s the pitch I delivered: “Teens are not a homogeneous group, but for the most part they’re smart, creative, technologically savvy, forward looking and often misunderstood by traditional marketers, experts and folk like us. ‘Do they care about health?’ might be the wrong question. I think the right question is, ‘What do teens care about?’ and if we better understand that, we’ll know how they feel, act and care about health too, it’s just a piece of their own personal puzzle.”

I don’t know if I convinced this other unConference participant, but I’m convinced that there’s a need for BodiMojo. So let’s just say that the conference generated a lot of buzz—and I believe that BodiMojo will as well.
