OK, so I just took a Pew Research Center test on “How Millennial are You?” My score was 40 out of a possible 100, showing that I’m not so Millennial, even though my score was boosted by having a Facebook profile, sending a couple text messages in the last 24 hours, and not yet reading a newspaper today.
Pew’s recently released study of the attitudes of this generation (born starting in 1981) shows that they’re far more liberal than older Americans, less religious, and very upbeat about their future – an attitude that they’ll probably need to tide them through an uncertain economic environment. This ethnically and racially diverse “Generation Next” is also confident, connected, and open to change.
But what separates the Millennials the most from Gen X and the baby boomers is use of technology– and not just using gadgets, but fusing their social life to them. No wonder my 18-year-old seems tethered to his cell phone – it’s not just a communication instrument, it’s his communal lifeblood.
Now if I could only get rid of my landline, get a tattoo and a piercing, and play a video game or two. Then I’d really be Millennial.
Pssst: Hubby, get a cell phone. You’re soooo yesterday.
