Health Care Reform: With Youth in Mind

March 22nd, 2010 by Tara Cousineau, PhD · No Comments

American Healthcare ReformPerhaps nothing has been more divisive than the topic of health care reform. Similar to watching a boxing match that goes from round to round, at some point you just want it over with as the bruises and cuts on both sides are hard to stomach. But here we are with a match won. On March 21, 2010, the House passed health care reform. It’s imperfect. Compromises were made and will continue to be made. But it’s a start.

A new beginning. That is the reframe we need to put on this political fight as we usher in spring. Our mission at BodiMojo is to educate and empower youth to make healthy decisions for themselves and to support peers to do the same. If health reform follows through on its mission, then the majority of children will have coverage, families won’t be denied insurance based on pre-existing conditions, and youth will be covered under their parents’ insurance until they are 26. (Given the current state of the job market, the latter is an important measure.) Further, according in to a summary in the Boston Globe, the proposed new law will make changes to Pell grants to support disadvantaged students over the next 10 years.

But here’s the other aspect that will have to change as the government supports health care for all: Prevention. Prevention efforts save lives and save money. The naysayers say that this new law will bankrupt the system. But what about the growing population of young people with pre-diabetes and Type II diabetes? That the U.S. has one of the worst infant mortality rates among industrialized nations? Health education and preventive medicine hold an important part on this new stage.

All in all health care reform will help future generations. And that is a good thing, indeed.
