BodiMojo just got two impressive accolades!
The online health community for teens got a great review from Common Sense Media, a website that provides trustworthy information, education, and an independent voice to help kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology.
BodiMojo was also named one of four finalists in the “Best Website for Teens” category in About.com’s 2011 Reader’s Choice awards.
Common Sense Media praised BodiMojo for providing “non-preachy” and “frank and factual information about teen health issues.” The review also commended BodiMojo for its “vast array of physical, mental, and emotional health topics”; for its positive message to teens “to take charge of their own health with solid facts along with goal-setting, self-affirmation, and good decision-making”; and for its strong emphasis on user-created content. The website also gave BodiMojo 4 out of 5 stars for tapping into social networking.
“Multi-platform use at its finest,” states the Common Sense Media website. “BodiMojo knows teens.”
The praise is most welcome, because it acknowledges BodiMojo’s effort to provide each teen user with a personalized experience. Other teen health websites provide valuable information—but BodiMojo goes beyond, tapping into the teen social networking scene and giving teens a central role in mapping out their own health and wellness goals. BodiMojo is a solid informational site, but also much more; it’s a community.
BodiMojo is all about decreasing teens’ risk of developing unhealthy life habits, emotional eating, or behaviors that can lead to more serious eating disorders—and doing it in ways that truly engage teens. “It’s about engaging teens emotionally rather than telling them to eat five servings of fruit and veggies each day or get in 60 minutes of physical activity,” says BodiMojo founder Tara Cousineau. “They’re tired of hearing that!”
Inviting girls to assess their body image, the BodiMojo team finds, is a good way to connect with girls about their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors for self-care. Engaging teen boys may be more complicated. Now, though, several teen boys are advising the tech team.
The latest? BodiMojo just released a Facebook app on its fan page allowing teens to take health quizzes, map a “mood cloud,” and send motivational messages, challenges, and virtual gifts to friends. And, coming this summer: a BodiMojo smart phone app.
Stay tuned!
