Give all teens a place, a voice, and a chance to take control of their health and feel good about it.
The Challenge
Today, about 17 percent—or 12 million kids in the U.S.—are overweight or obese. Another 12 million are at risk for becoming fat.
Boys and girls of all ethnicities and race are affected—some more than others due to health disparities. And the numbers are on the rise.
The health consequences are staggering: asthma, type II diabetes, hypertension and heart problems, orthopedic complications and sleep apnea. The emotional consequences for teens include low self-esteem and depression. And it's not just in the U.S. All these problems affect other industrial and developing nations.
The health care costs associated with obesity threaten to cripple our already overburdened health care system.
In a media-driven, fast food, virtual world, teens get less and less physical activity and receive inaccurate (and disturbing) messages about beauty, fitness, and health. No wonder 70 to 80 percent are dissatisfied with their bodies.
But there's hope.
We believe connecting to the very things teens love—music, sports, dance, games, and being part of a healthy living community driven by teen creativity—will provide the necessary motivation and knowledge to reverse the obesity trend and promote overall sound decision making for mind and body.
We believe everybody is unique. Every body is different, and everybody has mojo. BodiMojo.
Let's go.
The Solution
Give teens the steering wheel. Reward efforts toward good health, community building, and participation.
BodiMojo.com a heath community web site for teens created in collaboration with teens and health experts. With initial funding from a National Institutes of Health grant, we built a platform that teens believe will work. Teens told us what they wanted and we listened. Now it’s up to us—and teens—to take BodiMojo to the next phase and reach as many teens as possible.
Our goal is to build a community of teens that allows youth to connect, motivate, and inspire one another in healthy decision making.
BodiMojo includes music, interactive tools, games, videos, community building, contests, original content, social networking, and customized user pages for teens.
We at BodiMojo believe the future of health resides within our ability to provide behavioral motivation and incentives in an increasingly mobile and consumer-oriented world.
